TracePro combines a graphical user interface with solid modeling, Monte Carlo ray tracing, analysis features, CAD import/export, optimization methods, and a complete and robust macro language to solve a wide variety of problems in illumination design and optical analysis.

It is primarily used in illumination design to simulate and optimize light pipes, light guides, and non-imaging lenses and mirrors. TracePro is also a powerful tool for analysis of non-imaging aspects of imaging systems such as stray light and polarization. With its full set of features, designers can simulate surface effects including absorption, specular reflection and transmission, and scattering. Bulk properties including absorption, scattering, and fluorescence enable the design and analysis of devices for a wide variety of applications.

TracePro is also used to virtually build and test prototypes, reducing the cost and time to build and test a series of physical prototypes. Users find that they can successfully avoid intermediate steps and build only a final prototype. TracePro provides an integrated software environment that helps you complete almost any task in contemporary illumination design. More than a ray tracing program, it also provides advanced tools for designing medical devices, illumination, display backlights, light pipes, automotive lighting, and many other applications.

Key Features & Benefits

TracePro is a comprehensive program for designing and analyzing illumination systems and non-imaging optical systems, as well as non-imaging aspects of imaging systems. A Monte Carlo ray tracing software based on a solid modeling engine, it is an excellent tool for simulating most any optical or illumination system. Many engineers use it for virtual prototyping, avoiding most of the cycles of costly and time-consuming hardware prototypes. TracePro’s analysis tools include Irradiance/Illuminance Maps, Candela Plots, Luminance Maps, Polarization Maps, and Ray Tables. The Path Sorting feature enables users to learn what is happening in their design. Photorealistic Rendering enables visualization of lit appearance. The 3D Interactive Optimizer enables automatic optimization of the shape of a lens or reflector to achieve a set of weighted performance targets. Targets can be any combination of:

  • Irradiance/Illuminance Profile or Distribution
  • Candela or Angular Intensity Profile or Distribution
  • Color in CIE xy or u'v' Coordinates
  • Beam Width
  • Beam Center
  • Luminance

Industry Applications

TracePro is used in a broad range of industries. Almost any application that uses light can take advantage of TracePro’s design, analysis, optimization, and virtual prototyping capabilities.

Lighting

Design indoor and outdoor light fixtures for residential and commercial environments, street lighting, stadium lighting, airport runway lighting, daylighting, emergency lighting, and entertainment lighting.

Consumer Electronics

Indicator lights illuminated using light pipes benefit from the 3D Optimizer and photorealistic rendering for lit appearance simulation. Advanced features such RepTile make possible the design of displays, including digital cinema and office projectors, computer monitors, mobile phone displays, and televisions.

Automotive

Automotive lighting designers use it for interior lighting, exterior lighting, instrument panels, and head-up displays.

Aerospace & Defense

TracePro is used for stray light analysis and design for remote sensing systems, astronomical telescopes, and planetary exploration (e.g. Mars Rover cameras).

Medical & Life Sciences

Trace Pro is used for dental and surgical lighting, medical imaging and illumination for endoscopes, tissue optics applications (e.g. detection of melanoma), spectroscopes, and laser and LED surgical devices.

Energy

In solar energy collection, TracePro enables design and validation of solar concentrators for electric power generation including solar towers, dishes, and troughs.
